Sustainability Certifications and Labels
Sustainability certifications make sustainability work visible, measurable, and
credible – both for the company itself and for its customers.
Certifications help companies to:
- Develop sustainability management and practices
- Ensure compliance with laws and other requirements
- Identify new ways to improve cost-efficiency
- Gain a competitive advantage
- Increase stakeholder trust
- Reduce operational risks
In Finnish ski resorts, the most common certification is Ekokompassi
(EcoCompass), which is used by more than ten ski resorts. EcoCompass is
based on the ISO 14001 environmental management standard, but is a simplified
version of it.
Many ski resorts also use the Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) label.
- The STF label is a Finnish sustainability programme and label for the tourism
industry, awarded by Visit Finland. The label indicates that a tourism company or
destination operates responsibly and is systematically developing its
sustainability practices. - STF covers all dimensions of sustainability: economic, ecological, and socio-
cultural sustainability. - The programme is aligned with international standards and is valued by
international tourism operators and travellers.
